Smith From: Lpool [Liverpool?] 24 April 1844 Dear William Finding Mr Humphreys rather tender about sending on your other 50 brls [barrels?] Flour without more cash - I have handed him the amt [amount?] of the accompanying Cr [credit?] & got down the 50 Brls [barrels?] away for shipment by Mondays Boat You may therefore depend on this going - Several defalcations [defaults?] by Irish Parties lately appeared to create caution, & I seen by their accts [accounts?] there was in those instances severe reason for caution - Such mititates [mitigates?] even against the up -right fair dealer, but a little more business will create confidence. I rather think the parties J. Rork so foolishly sent forward contrary to my expressd [expressed?] desire in time have returned home, namely Bridget Denison & Co. [company?] not having seen anything of them these two days. On their arrival here I offerd [offered?] to hand them their cash & half a crown each out of my own pocket to carry them over if they would at once return till the Terms should become moderate - Which now is not expected to the United States New regulations being introduced that are likely to cause passages that way to keep up. Denison's brother & co [company?] tryd [tried?] stiff enough to have me fined £10 - for not fulfilling Joseph's agreement made without authority from me in the Teeth of tremenduous prices - but I at once resisted the attempt, knowing that what was done was intended as friendship both to them & me Without considering the penalty of giving a Ticket in Uncertainty. I hope to find sufficient accommodation for any of your parties who may come along tomorrow I have managed to get Miles Martins family on board ready to start on Monday - And glad to get them out of the way I assure you - Both your Letters of 22d Inst. [instant?] came to hand together today Passage to New York this week is only £6 for Young or old - Many ships refuse to take any Passrs [Passengers?] to the States in consequence of the New regulations What is to be done with poor Emigrants few can tell Most truly yours Thos [Thomas?] Elliott Mr W.G.
