Off Sussex 3rd Sept. 1880 My dear James Off at last from London, having embarked yesterday, and Sailed this Morning at 9 a.m. We Call at Plymouth for the Mails—then by St. Vincent and the Cape to Adelaide and Melbourne. The Ship is a Splendid Vessel, goes along very steadily, but the day has been a wet one. The Saloons are like the Coffee rooms of a Splendid hotel. We sleep 6 in a birth, and I have got some queer cards—a melancholic old man, a suicidal looking Scotch fellow who says he will return at Plymouth, as he changed his mind, and a devilish nice fellow, an Irishman, who has been travelling over the world. There are [many] Nationalities on board, and plenty of fine girls. The grub is first class. I have been talking to a young English barrister and his wife, who are going to Tasmania. However, I will write more about the Vessel from the Cape. I delivered a lecture to the Cogers on Tuesday, and was splendidly Received. They gave me a great far[e]well address afterwards. I have brought out the placard announcing it, as a sort of Trophy. Remember me to O'Leary and the others, and now I must say good bye again, as I am near dead writing.
