| Transcript | Chicago January 10th 1878 Dear Mother I rite [write?] you these few lines to let you know that we are all well hoping this will find you the same as it leaves us at present I did not go home this fall but by the help of God if I am speared [spared?] I will be in Ballyfounder before this time next year Uncle William has got his hip bone hurted [hurt?] but he is able to go around again he slid and fell on it he says he will go home with me to hunt up a bit woman. Nick Martin has been dowsey [dozy?] on it this good while back The Doctor aint shure [is not sure?] what is the matter with him but he is able to go about his business ant [aunt?] Bella and family is well Sam and Mrs and family are all in good health. I saw Mrs Wilson that was Miss Jane Savage of High St. her and her husband and family is well. And I saw a Miss McBride she is a love child of David John's of the mountain she use to stop in Mrs Boomers [ke--?] two or three Doors above Mary Ann & Mr and Mrs and Miss Dempster and Miss McDowell they are all in good health. I will not mention anything about the seventh who as I am sure you have heard it all long ago I have the best of health myself I weigh about 200 lbs so it tells my health is good thank God Dear Mother I now send this home to you for you to do the best you know how as the banks has all gone to the Divil [Devil?] but one or two I have nothing more to say but give my best respects to all my inquiring [enquiring?] friends and to my sisters and brothers and Granma and tell her I will be home next fall to stop a week or two. Do not forget Mrs Morton and here remains your affection [affectionate?] son William Shanks |
